The Safety Institute and the Jim Berkowitz Driving Safety Fund announce a collaboration of efforts to do outreach to young drivers.
It’s years in the making, but I am happy to announce that I have set up a new memorial fund for my brother Jim with the help of The Safety Institute, a new injury prevention organization based in Massachusetts where I live. As many of you know, my brother Jim died in a tragic car accident during his second year of law school while driving from D.C. back to North Carolina. From all appearances, it was a “fall asleep” crash. What happened to him could have happened to anyone.
For the past ten years, I’ve been using my own training in public health to work with injury prevention experts in Massachusetts to increase awareness of the hazards of drowsy driving. Little attention was given to this issue until recently because of the lack of hard data. I’ve decided to combine efforts with The Safety Institute to establish the Jim Berkowitz Driving Safety Fund to do outreach to young drivers. The hope is that our efforts can help prevent these kind of accidents.
Any contributions to this fund would be greatly appreciated.
